Neurogenetics: Short-Circuiting Sexually Dimorphic Behaviors

چکیده
It is clear that male and female animals behave differently, but how do those differences arise? New studies show that there are extensive, sex-specific differences in the anatomy of neurons that underlie reproductive behaviors in Drosophila.

Effects of Dextromethorphan on Depressive- and Cognitive-Associated Behaviors: A Sexually Dimorphic Study
Introduction: We investigated the sexually dimorphic effects of Dextromethorphan (DM) on cognitive and depression-like behaviors as well as on hippocampal histology in rats following acute administration. Methods: Wistar rats of both sexes were treated with 25 or 50 mg/kg of DM for 7 days via intraperitoneal injection. At the end of the administration, behavioral studies were performed on the ...

Sexually dimorphic behaviors, qualitative or quantitative differences in behaviors between the sexes, result from the activity of a sexually differentiated nervous system. Sensory cues and sex hormones control the entire repertoire of sexually dimorphic behaviors, including those commonly thought to be charged with emotion such as courtship and aggression. Such overarching control mechanisms re...
متن کاملDevelopmental neurogenetics of sexual dimorphism in Aedes aegypti
Sexual dimorphism, a poorly understood but crucial aspect of vector mosquito biology, encompasses sex-specific physical, physiological, and behavioral traits related to mosquito reproduction. The study of mosquito sexual dimorphism has largely focused on analysis of the differences between adult female and male mosquitoes, particularly with respect to sex-specific behaviors related to disease t...
متن کاملModular Genetic Control of Sexually Dimorphic Behaviors
Sex hormones such as estrogen and testosterone are essential for sexually dimorphic behaviors in vertebrates. However, the hormone-activated molecular mechanisms that control the development and function of the underlying neural circuits remain poorly defined. We have identified numerous sexually dimorphic gene expression patterns in the adult mouse hypothalamus and amygdala. We find that adult...
متن کاملSexually dimorphic synaptic organization of the medial amygdala.
The medial amygdala is important in social behaviors, many of which differ between males and females. The posterodorsal subnucleus of the medial amygdala (MeApd) is particularly sensitive to gonadal steroid hormones and is a likely site for gonadal hormone regulation of sexually dimorphic social behavior. Here we show that the synaptic organization of the MeApd in the rat is sexually dimorphic ...
